Dunoon singer named UK artist of the week
Singer songwriter, Martha Hill

Friday, April 30

SINGER AND Songwriter Martha Hill, from Dunoon, has been named this week’s UK Artist of the Week by indie music website, the Vinyl District.

Martha, who now lives in Newcastle released her new single Change last week.

The song pays tribute to Martha’s upbringing here in Dunoon with lyrics such as ‘I grew up on a quiet street, straight out of school up the woods bare-feet’ and ‘When I first left, the home wasn’t somewhere I could place, now I’m on the train from Glasgow over to the west coast.’

Martha told this newspaper: “Change is about growing up, nostalgia and the paths not taken. I left Dunoon when Iwas 17 to go busk around Europe and (like all teenagers) I’d kind of painted it in a bad light in my head. But after coming home as an adult and seeing how strong the community is and how supportive everyone is, I just felt really lucky and proud to have grown up there.”

“2020 was actually a weirdly good year for me. After being tipped as one of BBC Introducing’s ‘ones to watch’, I had two tracks play-listed on BBC Radio 6music’s A-List and also got airplay on Radio 1.

“With the last EP being recorded over zoom during lockdown, I wanted this next one to have more organic sounds in it. Which has lead to a different, less bedroom poppy vibe.

“Also after such a serious year, I wanted to try and make music that was a bit more daft/upbeat. I hope you like it.”

Vinyl District described the song as ‘what happens when indie is done right’.

Change is available to stream on most UK streaming services now.
