Port Bannatyne Golf Club Winter League

The Port Bannatyne Winter League, sponsored by Rothesay Motor Services, is now well underway, and despite wet, foggy, and cold conditions, the competition remained fierce on the course.

Once again, the greens were in top condition, thanks to the hard work of Duncan and Graham, and the clubhouse was well-stocked with hearty offerings, including a much-appreciated homemade cottage pie to warm the golfers after their rounds.

There were a number of standout performances this week, with several players showing exceptional skill despite the less-than-ideal weather.

Roddie and Chrissy’s victory in League A was especially impressive, with Roddie overcoming a pre-match tequila challenge from Martin at Bute Yard the night before.

Fisher, meanwhile, demonstrated his class with a dominant 5&4 win alongside birdie.

League B’s young guns, Stuart Gilchrist and Kalum Ledicott, proved too good for the experienced pairing of Sam and Iain, while John Whitelaw showcased his endurance, helping David McNee to a hard-earned victory in a five-hour marathon match.

In League C, Neil Whitelaw once again demonstrated why he’s considered one of the best golfers at Rothesay, securing a 3&2 victory without his usual playing partner, his father.

Meanwhile, Sean Lawrence, battling on his own, scored a key 1-up win against Gordon McIntyre and Robert McArthur in League C.

Lastly, League D saw Duncan Lyon and Ewan Irvine benefit from a walkover, while Colin Kelly and Carl Muir ground out another tight 1-up win, continuing their impressive run as last year’s winners.

A special mention must go to Stuart Gilchrist, who played exceptionally well, coming close to breaking into the 80s with a round that was remarkable given his 24 handicap.

Also, a personal highlight for one of the members was a 105-yard chip-in for a 2-for-1 on the 14th, helping seal a 5&4 victory.

With the winter league well underway, members can look forward to the next round of fixtures and eagerly await the league standings.

They also extend a huge thank you to Leighton Reid and the team at Rothesay Motor Services for their ongoing support of the winter league.
