New Burgh Hall chair emphasises urgent need for funds

The end of last year saw difficult days for Dunoon’s cultural venue, the Burgh Hall.

Now, a new chair of the building’s trustees is appealing for funds to ensure that the team’s important work can continue.

Like many arts organisations which rely on funding, Dunoon Burgh Hall is finding it difficult to operate in the current financial climate. Costs have risen dramatically, and funding is getting harder to come by, which has left the organisation facing a significant shortfall.

Starkly, there is an urgent need to raise £60,000 over the next few months or face the prospect of closure by the middle of the year.

However, if the hall can get through the next few difficult months there are exciting plans ahead.

The newly elected chair, Christina McKenzie, has been talking to us about the hall’s future.

“Beyond our initial fight for survival we’ve already begun work on our long-term strategy to rejuvenate every part of the building to make it better serve the local and wider community,” she said.

“We want the hall to become the beating heart of Dunoon and the wider Cowal peninsula.

“We’ve also asked the public how they’d like to use the space and what they’d like to come and see, and that will be built into our future plans, which we’ll publish towards the end of January.

“We believe there can be a bright future ahead if we can navigate through the immediate shortfall in revenue.”

Looking to a hopefully positive future, Christina added: “As a team, our shared vision for the future is to create a space that better serves the needs of the local community and to ensure this extraordinary building continues to be a source of joy, creativity, and connection for years to come.”

Christina says everyone who has an interest in the hall can help in two ways.

Firstly, by making a donation and secondly by spreading the word and sharing the hall’s appeal with friends and family.
