THE RACE for the prestigious Rothesay Golf Club Championship is well underway after two qualifying rounds were played on Sunday on a remarkably dry, fast-running course.
With the fairways providing plenty of run, the opening stage of the club’s premier competition produced some excellent scoring as players battled to secure one of the 12 qualifying places.
Leading the way was Graham Bolton, who produced a superb opening round of 63 before adding a solid 69 in the afternoon to top the qualifying standings in impressive fashion.
The top four qualifiers earned automatic passage to Tuesday’s quarter-finals. Joining Bolton are John McBride, Geo Reynolds and Caleb Bolton, who all booked their places in the last eight.
The remaining eight qualifiers will contest Monday evening’s first-round knockout matches for the right to join them in the quarter-finals. The ties are: Iain Simpson v Allan Smith Jnr; Stephen Reynolds v Lewis Poole; Lewis Reynolds v Malky Brown; Jack Reynolds v Tommy Reynolds.
It promises to be an exciting week at Rothesay Golf Club, with the Sunningdale Bowl and the Atlantic Tankard also being contested. Full results from all competitions will be published in next week’s Isle of Bute News.
Meanwhile, the Cyclops Bogey competition was won by club captain Derek Smith, adding another trophy to a busy week of golf at the club.
