MEMBERS at Port Bannatyne Golf Club enjoyed a packed weekend of competition, with many taking part in three popular events including the annual McFadyen/Paterson Mixed Night, the prestigious Millennium Trophy and the rescheduled MacLeod Construction Port Open.
The weekend began with the club’s ever-popular McFadyen/Paterson Mixed Night, which attracted eight teams of two gentlemen and one lady for a fun scramble competition over 12 holes.
Excellent scoring throughout the evening reflected the favourable conditions, with Caitlyn Kerr, Jordan Leitch and Roddie Leitch producing the best scratch score of the night to lift the Paterson Salver after carding an impressive 41.
The McFadyen Trophy, awarded for the best handicap score, was won by Angela Scott, Alan Scott and David Greer. Elaine McLean, Stuart McLean and Donald Standaloft finished runners-up, while Janet McAlister, Duncan Cowan and Al Stewart claimed third place.
Skill prizes were also keenly contested. Caitlyn Kerr, Jordan Leitch and Roddie Leitch won nearest the pin in two shots at the third, Janet McAlister claimed the ladies’ straightest drive at the fifth, while Al Stewart took the longest drive at the sixth. Angela Scott and Stuart McLean won the nearest-the-pin prizes at the 10th, with Cath Rae and Billy McFadyen taking the honours at the 18th.
The club paid tribute to the continued support of the McFadyen and Paterson families, with special thanks also going to John Whitelaw for preparing the scorecards. Billy McFadyen delivered a heartfelt toast in memory of his late friend and club stalwart I.L. McLeod, while Jim Bicker thanked both families on behalf of the club.
Attention then turned to the Millennium Trophy, with Port Bannatyne hosting the annual ladies’ competition.
Lady captain Janet McAlister organised the event, assisted by match secretary John Whitelaw, as 20 golfers from the three participating clubs competed on a course presented in excellent condition following morning rain that softened the greens.
Kirsty McLeod produced the best round of the day to win the Millennium Trophy, finishing ahead of Nicola Speirs in second and Karen Hardy in third.
McLeod also collected the closest-in-two prize at the fourth, while Anita Rutherford won nearest the pin at the 10th and Elaine McLean claimed the prize at the 18th.
The weekend concluded with the rescheduled 50th MacLeod Construction Port Open.
The event had originally been abandoned because of torrential rain, but although Sunday’s conditions were wet, they proved far more manageable, allowing almost 40 golfers to complete the competition.
Larry Devine claimed the handicap title, finishing ahead of Chris McKibben, John Black, Colin Renfrew and Iain McFarlane.
In the scratch competition, Donald Standaloft emerged victorious to lift the MacLeod Construction Port Open trophy after finishing ahead of Graham Dunn and Stephen Renfrew, with Matthew Dunn and John McBride completing the top five.
Skill prizes went to Robert Lavelle for nearest the pin at the fourth and 16th, Hector Whitelaw at the 10th, and John Black at the 18th.
The club also thanked MacLeod Construction for its long-standing support of the event, which marked its 50th year.
