CALLS have been made for white lines to be painted on a key road on the Kintyre Peninsula, with support from a councillor for the area.
A member of the public raised the issue in relation to the road linking Stewarton to Southend, citing safety concerns.
Councillor John Armour (SNP, South Kintyre) said that he had raised the issue many times already and had recently repeated the request to an Argyll and Bute Council official.
The discussion took place at a meeting of the council’s Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands area committee on Wednesday, September 2.
Malcolm Ronald said: “One thing that always comes up is the lack of white lines on the road from Stewarton to Southend. It is quite a safety issue.
“The reason is that the road is not wide enough, but it is a two-lane road. Given the community council has raised the issue with councillors who attend, I think it should be done.”
Councillor Armour responded: “I totally take your point and do not disagree with it. It is something I have raised numerous times, and in the evening, or on a winter night, it can be quite hazardous if you are meeting another car.
“The other issue is the summer, when there are people who do not know the road and can veer to one side.
“There is a standard width, and while white lines are not required, I spoke to the roads monitoring and standards manager two weeks ago and asked him to look again at putting white lines on, especially where the road is wide enough.
“From Stewarton to Southend, there are no white lines other than older ones that have been there for quite a few years.”
