A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has raised an impressive £1,200 for the neonatal unit which cared for his baby brother by completing a half-mile sponsored swim.
On Wednesday, August 12, Rory Webster completed 32 lengths of the Riverside Leisure Centre pool in just 37 minutes to raise money for Wishaw Neonatal Unit, where his younger brother was cared for a week following his birth.
The youngster decided he wanted to do something to raise money to help other babies and chose a sponsored swim because swimming is something he enjoys and takes part in every week.
Despite some nerves about whether he would manage the full distance, Rory successfully completed all 32 lengths with his support team cheering him on.
Rory said he felt amazing after completing the challenge and was excited and proud to have made it to the end – celebrating his achievement afterwards with a well-earned chippy dinner.
As the donations continued to come in, Rory also began to appreciate just how much money his efforts had raised for the unit.
His family said they were proud beyond words of the thoughtful six-year-old and delighted that he had been able to give something back to the hospital team which helped his little brother.
Rory’s grandmother, Sandra, said his extended family were equally proud of his achievement and had been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement he received.
The youngster’s original motivation was simple – he wanted to raise money so the neonatal unit could continue helping other babies.
His determination in the pool ultimately saw him raise £1,200 for the cause, while completing the half-mile challenge in well under an hour.
