Warning issued over ‘pink cocaine’ in Dunoon

A DUNOON recovery organisation has issued an urgent warning over reports that a potentially dangerous drug known as ‘pink cocaine’ may once again be circulating in the town.

The Recovery Corner, a community-based recovery support service offering group sessions, training and drop-in support, took to social media earlier this month to alert local residents to the possible presence of the substance.

Despite its name, pink cocaine is not necessarily cocaine. Instead, it is a street name for a mixture of drugs which can contain substances such as MDMA, ketamine and other synthetic compounds.

The precise contents can vary considerably, making its effects unpredictable and potentially life-threatening.

In its public warning, The Recovery Corner said: “It has come to our attention that ‘Pink Cocaine’ may be circulating in the area again. Please be extremely careful.

“Some of these substances can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal, particularly when mixed with alcohol or other drugs.”

The organisation urged people to look out for themselves, their friends and others in the community, stressing the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance if someone becomes seriously unwell after taking the substance.

Its warning comes amid concerns about the unpredictable nature of drugs sold under the pink cocaine name, with users potentially unaware of what substances they are consuming.

Laura Stephenson, Argyll and Bute Alcohol and Drug Partnership Co-ordinator, explained: “Cocaine puts extreme strain on the cardiovascular system, raising heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to chest pain, heart attacks, or strokes even in young people. There is no way of knowing, without testing, what is within a drug supply as it maybe contaminated with a range of substances, including opiods so it’s important to consider and understand these risks.

“We encourage anyone who uses drugs, including people who only use cocaine, to carry naloxone. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose while emergency help is on the way.”

The Recovery Corner’s warning has reinforced the importance of community awareness, particularly as substances sold under familiar street names may contain unexpected ingredients.
