Bute’s annual Christmas lights switch-on illuminated Rothesay once again, despite the challenging wet and windy weather.
The event, which took place last week, brought the community together for a festive celebration, marking the official start of the holiday season on the island.
A big thank you was extended to the many who braved the cold, showing up in force to witness the much-anticipated switch-on.
The evening’s entertainment included an incredible line-up of performances from local children, whose renditions of Christmas carols and festive songs delighted the crowd.
Ricky Harrison, from Bright Nights Entertainment, was the perfect MC for the event, bringing boundless energy and enthusiasm to the stage.
One of the highlights of the night was the arrival of Father Christmas himself. Riding in on a tractor, chauffeur-driven by Chloe of the Bute Junior Agricultural Club, Santa made a grand entrance, much to the delight of children and families in the crowd.
From the roof of the Discovery Centre, Father Christmas officially flicked the switch to illuminate the town’s Christmas lights, turning Rothesay into a winter wonderland.
Local businesses and community groups added their special touch to the evening’s festivities. Bute Kitchen kept everyone warm and well-fed with delicious food and drinks sourced from local suppliers, their friendly faces offering a welcome respite from the chilly evening air.
Nearby, S3 hospitality students from Rothesay Joint Campus showcased their creativity, helping event-goers decorate gingerbread houses—a fun and festive activity that was enjoyed by all ages.
Apple Tree Nursery added an enchanting glow to the event with their beautifully lit stall, showcasing a variety of light-up decorations perfect for the holiday season.
Meanwhile, the Winter Garden Glow shone bright thanks to their contribution, adding to the overall magical atmosphere of the evening.
Behind the scenes, Hazel from the Discovery Centre was praised for her incredible efforts in ensuring the event ran smoothly, with many expressing how much the Discovery Centre team will be missed when they close next year.
Hazel’s dedication and leadership were truly felt by all who attended.
Despite the challenging weather, the event highlighted just how popular the Christmas lights switch-on is – the organisers were thrilled by the strong turnout.
However, the large crowds did present some logistical challenges, particularly the limited space available for such a popular event.
With this in mind, the organisers are keen to hear feedback and ideas from the community about future Christmas events, and a short feedback form has been made available for anyone wishing to share their thoughts:. Scan the QR code to share yours:
