Bute Community Forest has been recognised for its exceptional community-led regeneration efforts, winning the 2024 SURF Award for the best regeneration project in Scotland.
The award, which celebrates outstanding community initiatives, was presented to the group last Thursday night, marking a major milestone in the development of the forest as a local asset.
The Bute Community Forest was shortlisted alongside projects from Cranhill, Glasgow, and Orkney, but ultimately triumphed for its dedication to environmental restoration and community engagement.
The team behind the project, including eco-hut builders, event organisers, volunteers, and tree planters, have worked tirelessly to transform the forest into a vibrant hub for both nature and people.
Richard Whitcomb, chair of the Bute Community Forest, expressed his pride in the achievement: “As the Chair of Bute Community Forest, I was bowled over to receive the SURF award on behalf of the organisation and community.
“It is testament to the hard work of so many, from our eco-hut builders to those running art events, to our volunteers who support other volunteers, to our Roundhouse builders, to our tree planters, to our partners supporting nature restoration.
“The Community Forest is a community asset—there for everyone—one we want to improve and enhance, to benefit both nature and people.”
The award highlights the continued growth and success of the Bute Community Forest, a project that brings people together to restore the natural environment, create sustainable spaces, and promote community cohesion. The forest has become a symbol of what can be achieved when local people come together to make a positive impact on their surroundings.
