After the disappointment of the County Cup match against Millport, four Bute curlers headed off on Tuesday, February 4, to the Waterfront Ice Rink for the penultimate game of this season’s Argyll Province competition.
The Bute rink, skipped by Donald Kinnear, Duncan Lyon, Mike Hislop and Peter Martin faced a rink from Dunoon in the morning game.
In a tight game, with only one end being decided by more than one shot, Bute came out winners by five shots to three.
A win, but no cigar, as Oban were comfortable winners against the combine rink from Glen Orchy/Tighnabruach (G&T) and claimed the McQuisten Cup.
At stake in the afternoon match was the Dunoon Argyll Quaich.
The Bute curlers eased ahead against the combined G&T rink but the challenge was to beat the Oban score – who were in control over Dunoon on the other rink.
The final end was crucial, with Bute having to win by two shots to secure the trophy.
G&T were lying shot but with his final stone the Bute skip was able to take it out to lie and with another Bute stone already counting, ensuring that Bute had the win and secured the trophy.
A rare and very welcome cup win in the Argyll Province for a Bute rink.
