Callum hangs up his Master’s hat

AFTER A CalMac career spanning nearly thirty years, MV Bute master, Calum Bryce hung up his captain’s hat for the last time on Wednesday, April 9 to step into his next adventure –retirement.

Calum first went to sea as a Deck Cadet in 1977 with Scottish Ship Management on geared bulk carriers and qualified with them as 2nd Officer in 1981. He worked for various other companies including Eastern Bulkers, North Sea Logistics, Middle East Navigation Aid Service, Northern Lighthouse Board, Fisheries Protection Agency and did a short stint on the PS Waverley.

In 1995, Calum joined CalMac as Chief Officer on MV Saturn and worked on all the streakers and Pioneer as Mate and Higher Grade Master.

He has also served on MV Hebrides, MV Loch Nevis, MV Clansman, MV Lord of the Isles, MV Isle of Mull, MV Argyle and MV Caledonian Isles, sailing on every major route with the exception of Islay.

Since 2008 Calum has been Master of MV Bute.

Calum shared this on his last few working days at CalMac: “I have enjoyed my time with CalMac, they have been a good employer and I’ve met a lot of good people both on the ships and ashore. As most people do throughout their lives, I’ve experienced some difficult times over the years, and CalMac has always been there for me. When I needed support I was shown compassion and understanding.

“I’m leaving with mixed emotions, I’ve been with the company for the best part of 30 years and now I’m 65 it’s time to retire. I’m going to miss the people and miss the job.”

Brian Wares, CalMac’s Marine Superintendent said: “It’s been a pleasure working with Calum over the years and I wish him a long and happy retirement, I hope to see him and his family travelling with CalMac in the near future.”

Calum is having a leaving do at O’Neills in the Merchant City in Glasgow from 5pm on Friday, April 25. Anyone who would like to go along and wish him well will be more than welcome.

A CalMac spokesperson said: “From everyone at CalMac, Calum, we thank you for your incredible service over the years and wish you a long and happy retirement.”
