Demolition work begins on Glen Lean bridge

Work has begun to demolish the Balliemore Bridge in Cowal’s Glen Lean.

The structure was damaged beyond repair in a severe storm last October, and a temporary bridge was installed a month later.

However, owner Argyll and Bute Council has now begun the process of building a new, permanent crossing.

The council confirmed last month that construction of the new bridge will begin in the new year, a spokesperson adding: “The unprecedented and emergency level of work required, throughout Argyll and Bute, following the October 2023 weather event has meant projects have developed on an on-going basis as damage and complex repair requirements have emerged. The main priority has been to keep travellers safe, businesses open and accessible, young people able to get to school and emergency services available for everyone.

On some projects, engineering teams encountered additional challenges, such as deeper rock than anticipated. This can cause unforeseen delays, as can poor weather.”
