Councillors are set to consider backing an ambitious project that could establish a “sustainable, world-class outdoor activities hub” in Dunoon.
A report, to be presented next week, offers an update on the Dunoon and Kilbride Hill Strategic Masterplan, developed by a local registered charity. The plan includes proposals such as a gondola-style cable car from the site of the former Glenmorag Hotel to the summit of Kilbride Hill, and a zip wire descending the hill.
The project, which has garnered support from community groups and local residents, is expected to take 20 years to complete. It will be discussed by Argyll and Bute Council’s planning, protective services, and licensing committee on Wednesday, October 23.
The report states that The Dunoon Project Limited, a community-based charity, produced the strategic masterplan after consulting with local stakeholders. The aim is to create “nature-based, world-class adventures” that will attract visitors and contribute to the local economy.
The long-term goal of the project is to develop a sustainable outdoor activities hub in the surrounding hills and forests, helping to re-establish Dunoon as a top tourism destination in Scotland. The initiative aims to increase tourism by encouraging more visitors to stay in the town, boosting the local economy and creating job opportunities.
South Cowal Community Council has expressed its full support for the project, highlighting the positive impact it could have on the local economy.
A council planning officer has recommended that the strategic masterplan be endorsed, stating that its vision, principles, and site designs are appropriate for sustainable development. The masterplan will serve as a framework for future planning applications and will be updated as the project progresses.
