Former Dunoon shop to become community hub

PLANNING permission has been granted for a former shop in Dunoon town centre to be converted into a community-use facility.

The former Wrights Clothing and Footwear premises at 192 Argyll Street was the subject of the application to support activities at a local church.

No representations, expressing objection or support, were received by Argyll and Bute Council planning officers during the planning process.

An officer said in a handling report: “The property as existing is a ground floor commercial unit which formerly operated under the company name of ‘Wrights Clothing and Footwear’ at 192 Argyll Street, Dunoon. The property is also within the Dunoon conservation area.

“The development the subject of this planning application is seeking to secure permission for the change of use from class 1A shop to Class 10 non-residential use – community uses such as museum, library, places of workshop.

“The applicant has advised the number of related church activities has increased and therefore requires a separate additional unit to allow these additional activities.

“This is the type of community use that is suitable for being in a town centre location and meets the policy outcome of ensuring the town centre remains a vibrant place.”

The report added: “Given the proposal is of a relatively minor nature, would have minimal impact upon the wider settlement area and conservation area. There would be no adverse effect upon the privacy or amenity to the neighbouring properties.”
