Inverclyde Council Leader 'steps back'

The leader of Inverclyde Council has “stepped back” from the role after appearing in court on Friday, it has been confirmed.

Councillor Stephen McCabe, 60, pleaded not guilty to charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and assault at Greenock Sheriff Court last week.

An intermediate diet has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 14, with a trial date set for Monday, February 10.

Following his court appearance, the local authority issued a statement which also outlined the arrangements until a new leader is elected.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Councillor McCabe has indicated that he has decided to step back from his role as leader of Inverclyde Council.

“Deputy leader Councillor [Natasha] McGuire will continue to deputise, following existing governance arrangements until a new leader is appointed.

“Leadership of the council is determined by the council’s elected members.

“The next meeting of Inverclyde Council will take place on Thursday, December 5.”
