JESSIE JEFFERY, born April 2, 1925, celebrated her 100th birthday in her Dunoon care home last week, surrounded by her family and friends.
Kath Miller, a close friend for many years from working in the laundry together, presented her with her letter from the King.
Jessie grew up on Hillfoot Street and has many fond memories there.
She is known by many round the town.
To celebrate, she received a visit from Patchwork Nursery to give her a gift and a singsong, followed by a party at Ardnahein, where Jessie enjoyed singing and dancing along to Kenny Wilson, who performed some classic Scottish music.
Jessie said: “I had a lovely time, it was a super birthday.
“We had cake and nice things to eat, there was children [who came round to sing] in the morning – so we had music for our breakfast.”
Despite reaching a landmark number, Jessie was keen to play down the importance of the occasion, and when asked how she felt turning 100, she said: “Same as 99, just the same.”
But she did stress the need to enjoy ‘everything in moderation’ in order to live such a long and healthy life.
And in her century on the planet, Jessie has seen a world of change, adding: “Everything has changed.
“Electricity, just the whole thing.”
One tradition that has stood the test of time, though, is a letter from the reigning monarch on an 100th birthday.
On the card she received, Jessie added: “It was very nice, it’s a very nice picture.
“Of course I still have it, my daughter’s looking after it.”
All the staff and residents at Ardnahein Care Home were delighted to wish Jessie a happy 100th birthday and play a part in her special day as she celebrated in style.
