The future of Tighnabruaich’s only petrol station is at a proverbial crossroads as its long-standing owners prepare to retire after more than 40 years of service.
Mark and Barbara Critchley, who have served the public and sold fuel at the station for decades, have announced plans to step back next year, sparking concerns about the availability of fuel in the area.
In response, the Tighnabruaich District Development Trust, (TDDT), has launched an online community survey to gauge support for safeguarding the station’s operations.
Recognising the petrol station as an essential service for the area, the TDDT has already secured assistance from the Scottish Land Fund to explore a potential community buy-out. The feasibility study aims to determine whether the station can remain operational under community ownership, ensuring access to fuel for residents and visitors alike.
A portion of the survey’s introduction reads: “This is to understand current and future fuel demand and to prioritise feasible uses for the site and building. The results of the anonymous survey will be available to all households in the community and there will be the opportunity for residents to discuss the findings.”
Respondents are required to answer 19 questions, and the closing date for the survey is Friday, December 20. For now, the petrol station’s fate remains uncertain, but the community’s efforts could mark the start of a new chapter in its history.
