Oban office to be transformed

COUNCIL bosses have given the go-ahead for an Oban town centre office to be turned into a residential flat.

John Wilson’s proposal for the premises at 17 Stafford Street was awarded planning permission after no representations were received by Argyll and Bute Council from the public.

A separate application, for listed building consent, was also approved by the authority’s planning officers.

A council official said in a handling report: “The premises form a suite of office accommodation at first floor level of a three and a half storey sandstone clad building situated within a terrace of tenement building on Stafford Street which incorporate a mix of retail units, offices and flatted properties.

“The proposed flat is accessed from a shared entrance at street level which also serves the upper floors of the building. Minimal internal works are required to form the accommodation which comprises a lounge/dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

“The proposal is considered to be an appropriate development within this town centre location where it will fit well with the established uses comprise a mix of commercial, residential and retail uses and will have no adverse impact of the status of the property as a listed building.”

The report added: “The conversion of this suite of disused offices to form a flatted dwelling is not considered to be a significant travel generating use or a proposal where it is considered important to monitor travel patterns resulting from the development.

“The proposal, by virtue of its central location within Oban town centre, would have direct and easy access to local facilities by a variety of sustainable transport methods, as well as being accessible by public transport.

“The development is adjacent to, and well served by, good public transport and pedestrian links such that the site the subject of this application is in a location where there are sufficient sustainable transport modes to provide access to and from the application site.”
