As winter approaches, the Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface (TSI) is inviting all local organisations, community centres, churches, and public venues across Cowal and Bute to join the ‘Winter Welcome Spaces’ initiative.
By registering or updating your details, you can ensure residents know where to find a warm, friendly space for a hot drink, companionship, and community during the colder months.
“We believe that everyone deserves a warm space to feel safe and welcomed, especially during the cold winter months,” said Takki Sulaiman, chief executive of the TSI. “Winter Welcome Spaces are about more than just a hot drink; they’re about building connections and supporting one another in our community.”
This initiative comes at a critical time as many elderly residents and others in need are facing increased challenges, particularly due to recent changes to the UK’s Winter Fuel Payment. Previously available to all pensioners, this payment has been restricted to those on means-tested benefits, leaving many older residents just above the threshold without financial support for heating costs. With rising costs and reduced financial assistance, community support has never been more essential.
The Winter Welcome Spaces initiative seeks to mitigate these challenges by providing free access to comfortable venues where people can gather, warm up, and find companionship. By joining, your organisation or venue will play a key role in supporting the community this winter.
