Bute’s Christmas lights switch-on in Guildford Square went ahead as planned this year, but the display faced some technical issues that left it less than spectacular.
The lights were switched on as scheduled, but due to a delay in securing permission to use the electricity supply, the display left plenty to be desired
However, after a few hiccups, the issues have now been fully resolved and the lights are back up and running just in time for Christmas, bringing festive cheer to the town square once more.
Bute’s Business Improvement District (BID) coordinator, DL Gordon, said: “I was aiming to have the lighting issue in Guildford Square resolved by last Friday, as that would have been 12 days before Christmas.
“It looked like everything was on track, thanks to Bute’s own superman and man of steel, Duncan Martin of Bute Blacksmiths.
“He flew in to save the day and got the new electric lights put in place.”
Despite Martin’s efforts to install the lights, the final step of switching them on was delayed due to a particular shortage on the island: “Unfortunately, no electricians I contacted were available to switch them on in this busy period.
“I put out an appeal for help on social media, and a local hero, who doesn’t want to be named, stepped in and finally brought the town square into full festive light, for which I’m extremely grateful.
She added: “The Isle of Bute BID would like to wish all residents and visitors a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.”
While the initial switch-on may not have been as smooth as planned, the lights are now fully operational, adding a much-needed touch of festive magic to Guildford Square just in time for the holiday season.
