POLICE closed off part of a main road in Toward on Friday morning following a major incident which led to a number of people being evacuated from their homes.

Its understood that just after 5am on the morning of January 3 a lorry travelling on the A815 hit a gas main as it left the road at the junction with the Shore Road. Emergency services attended and people were then told to leave their homes as a precaution.

The road was closed for most of the morning and nearby residents in Toward reported a load noise which was later deemed to be gas escaping from the burst main.

Engineers were on site and the gas supply to the local area was turned off leaving many homes in Toward without heating. Gritters from Argyll and Bute Council’s roads department had to grit the road before police could reopen it to motorists.

A statement from Police Scotland explained: “The A815 was closed at Cowal Kirk in Toward, south of Dunoon, following a crash involving a lorry which hit a gas main. The incident happened around 5.20am. There are no reported injuries.”

UPDATE: As of 11.30am homes are still without gas with no word on when supplies will resume.
