MEMBERS of Kyles of Bute Golf Club enjoyed excellent playing conditions as the second round of the Club Championship was contested in fantastic weather on Sunday, July 19.
With the course much firmer than it had been during the opening round a week earlier, players competed for a range of trophies before the overall championship winners were decided.
Barry Carruthers claimed the Round Two scratch honours with an impressive gross score of 72. Dan MacRae recorded the only two of the day.
In the handicap competition, Jackie Whyte produced a superb net score of 62 to take first place, with Andy Pownall finishing second on a net 66.
The overall Club Championship was decided by combining scores from the opening round on Sunday, July 12, and the second round.
Carruthers successfully defended his title, retaining the Club Championship scratch trophy with a 36-hole gross score of 136.
Gordon Whyte finished runner-up on gross 148, while Duncan Kerr secured third place with a gross 151.
In the Seniors Cup, Jim Carruthers claimed the scratch title with a gross 155. Tom G. Whyte was second on 156, with Niall McFarlane third on 160.
The 36-hole Handicap Championship proved to be one of the closest contests of the competition, with Eddie J. Wright and Douglas Anderson both finishing on a net score of 140. Wright was awarded the trophy after edging the countback on the better inward half.
The ladies’ section also got its championship underway on Tuesday, July 15, with the opening round completed.
Lucie Cooney leads the scratch championship after the first round, with Di Ouzman close behind, while Mhairi Carruthers heads the handicap competition heading into the concluding stages.
With several championships still to be decided, there remains plenty to play for as another busy golfing season continues at Kyles of Bute Golf Club.
