The main roadworks phase of a major redevelopment programme started on schedule on Monday, Inverclyde Council has confirmed in a fresh update.
The Central Greenock Project is being delivered by the local authority alongside contractor Balfour Beatty and has been largely funded by the UK Government.
There are lane closures on approach to the Bullring Roundabout but vehicle access to the town centre will continue using traffic management between Container Way and the eastern side of the A8 Dalrymple Street across from the Municipal Buildings.
From Monday, August 3, this will be followed by the closure of the A78 High Street flyover and a section of the A8 between Wallace Place and the western side of Dalrymple Street opposite Tesco.
The council has asked those travelling through the area to allow extra time and follow signed diversion routes if they are required.
Earlier this month, leader Stephen McCabe said: “We know how frustrating roadworks can be and there will inevitably be disruption during this vital phase of the project, but every effort is being made to keep the disruption to an absolute minimum and, crucially, ensure Greenock town centre remains open for business throughout.
“It’s important that people plan ahead and leave extra time for their journeys.”
It added bus stations and the main bus routes will continue to operate but there will be changes to some routes due to diversions – these cover services 507, 517, 550, 531, 532, 533, 901, 906 and X7.
Meanwhile, the car parks in the Bullring Roundabout and Hunter’s Place are now closed.
It is hoped the improvements delivered through the project will create better connections between the town centre and waterfront, enhanced pedestrian facilities, new public spaces and a more attractive town centre for people.
