A missing dog at the centre of a huge island-wide search on Bute has been found safe and well, in what her relieved owners are calling a Christmas miracle.
Black-and-white Rio, who went missing shortly after arriving on the island for a week’s holiday on Monday, was discovered late on Tuesday afternoon, around three miles from St Blanes House, on a road near Mount Stuart, following anxious searching.
Her owner, Nicky Rhodes, explained that it was completely out of character, as she has never run away before.
She posted a message and pictures of Rio on social media, sparking an immediate response from people across the island offering help to trace the pooch.
Nicky said online: “Rio ran away last night (she’s never done this before). She is medium sized, black and white, smooth coated.
“She is wearing a pink collar and is chipped. She is nervous as she is a rescue, so if spotted please get in touch or call the police as she needs to be approached with caution.”
One supporter replied online: “It’s an island of dog lovers, Nicky. She’ll be home in no time, and with enough time to enjoy your holiday.”
One responder even suggested calling on the services of a drone to help in the search.
The rescue dog’s disappearance prompted an immediate outpouring of support from the island community.
Social media lit up with messages of encouragement and offers of help, with locals keeping watch while out walking their own dogs and sharing information.
When Rio was finally found, she was filthy and starving, having clearly been on a long journey, but thankfully otherwise unharmed.
Her owner, Nicky Rhodes, said she was overwhelmed by the kindness shown by people across the island.
The search effort brought together residents from all corners of Bute, with dog lovers, walkers and volunteers all playing a part in keeping hope alive. From sharing posts and photos to checking roads, fields and paths, the island truly rallied behind the missing pup.
What began as a worrying start to a family holiday ended in joy, relief and gratitude, with Rio’s safe return proving that sometimes, Christmas miracles really do happen.
