Ardbeg Distillery pier repair plans revealed

PLANS have been revealed for repairs to the pier at Ardbeg Distillery on Islay, along with the reinstatement of the seawall.

The Glenmorangie Company has made the applications for listed building consent and planning permission to Argyll and Bute Council, which would see repairs made following storm damage.

The building was hit hard by Storm Eowyn in January, which resulted in the seawall collapsing and the pier also being impacted.

A decision from the council’s planning officers is expected by mid-February, with the public now able to view plans and submit feedback.

A design statement by North Planning and Development said: “The proposals being advanced by The Glenmorangie Company will bring about the reinstatement of the Ardbeg Distillery seawall together with essential repairs to the pier, caused by recent storm damage.

“In particular, the works to the listed pier will help to safeguard which is an important built heritage asset.

“In terms of design, our client’s proposals achieve a well-considered response to the application site, with the proposed seawall being finished in stone to match the original seawall, complementing the adjoining pier and maintaining the established character of the site.

“The works to the pier will follow established conservation principles, with the proposed repair works being undertaken on a like for like basis.

“This statement demonstrates that the proposals have been carefully considered and respond appropriately to all relevant planning policies and material considerations.

“Having regard to all the foregoing points and in particular the proposal’s compliance with the development plan and relevant material considerations, the proposed development is commended to Argyll and Bute Council and we respectfully request that planning permission and listed building consent is granted.”
