PLANS for a craft whisky distillery in Ardrishaig have been awarded permission by council officers.
The proposal by Spectrum Spirits Ltd for the former oil depot site on Chalmers Street attracted a single objection from the public to Argyll and Bute Council.
It also received one expression of support for the principle of development from Scottish Canals, recommending that pedestrian connections were strengthened.
The council has now given the plans the go-ahead, saying they represent “high-quality redevelopment of a long-standing vacant brownfield site within one of Ardrishaig’s most important regeneration areas”.
One of the authority’s planning officers said in a handling report: “The principal issue for consideration is whether the proposed redevelopment of the former oil depot for a craft whisky distillery with associated visitor facilities represents an acceptable form of development in principle, having regard to the development plan and all other material considerations.
“The application site comprises a long-established brownfield site occupying a highly prominent position on the Ardrishaig waterfront. The previous industrial use has ceased, and the land has remained vacant for a considerable period, detracting from both the visual amenity of the harbour frontage and the wider regeneration aspirations for this part of the settlement.
“The proposal therefore represents an opportunity not simply to develop a vacant site, but to deliver comprehensive regeneration of land specifically identified within the adopted local development plan for redevelopment.
“Rather than extending development into the countryside or undeveloped coastal land, [the proposal] would secure the beneficial reuse of an established industrial site within the settlement boundary.
“In doing so it would remove a visually poor and under-utilised site whilst introducing a productive commercial use capable of contributing positively to the local economy.”
The report added: “The application site occupies one of the most visually significant redevelopment opportunities within Ardrishaig. It forms part of a working waterfront whose character has continually evolved through commercial and industrial activity.
“In this regard, the proposed redevelopment continues the industrial heritage of the harbour whilst significantly improving the appearance of the site through the replacement of vacant and deteriorating infrastructure with a high-quality contemporary building.
“The proposal is therefore considered to respond positively to the established character of the area.”
