PLANS have been revealed for an external facelift for an events venue in Campbeltown – including a new-look façade and new 3D letter signage.
The Victoria Hall is the subject of plans by Argyll and Bute Council, whose proposal has been published in its own online planning portal.
The building was built around 140 years ago, and was used as a military drill hall for the 1st Argyll Highlanders Rifle Volunteers, and later the 3rd and 5thBattalions of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
It is now operated by liveArgyll as a community events venue, and is due to stage a production of Rangers FC history play ‘The Journey Back’ in March.
The public can now view the plans and submit feedback, with a determination deadline of early April.
A supporting statement said that the works included “Repainting the façade to refresh its appearance and protect the external fabric – the proposed colour scheme has been chosen to improve the building’s visual relationship with neighbouring properties and remains in line with other façade upgrades carried out in the town.
“The existing colours bear no historical significance and have changed multiple times since being rebuilt with no clear consistency over the years.
“The choice of Keim (paints) has been made to ensure longevity of finishes, as can be seen throughout Campbeltown with other projects carried out over the last 10-15 years with Keim paints that have required little to no maintenance.
“Removing existing metal signage – proposed replacement with 3D letter signage aims to be more visually appealing and readable while not appearing distractingly modern.
“Removing four windows that are blocked internally, providing no benefit. Retaining the existing timber windows and upgrading them with thin-profile double glazing, improving energy efficiency while preserving their external character. Minor repairs to cills and frames may be required but the windows have clearly been well maintained over the years and would seem wasteful to replace.”
