Brandanes and Gartcosh Left in the dark

An enthralling encounter between Gartcosh and the Brandanes was abandoned after 65 minutes when the Broadwood floodlights failed, leaving the sides locked at 1-1.

The evening began with a bang as Gartcosh struck first inside five minutes.

A quick break down the left saw their left winger race beyond the Brandanes defence and deliver a low cross that was turned home from close range for 1-0.

The lead lasted barely two minutes, though, as Ronan Officer, a constant menace on the left for the visitors, took a quick throw-in and found Sean Lawrence in space.

The Danes talisman found himself on the edge of the box before exquisitely curling a right-footed shot over the stranded goalkeeper – his 19th goal of a prolific campaign so far.

An entertaining and open contest followed.

Officer remained central to everything positive for the islanders, delivering a series of dangerous crosses, one of which was met by Yasser Basit, only for the header to drift narrowly wide.

At the other end, Gartcosh’s early scorer twice threatened again but was denied both times by Jamie Robertson in the Danes goal.

Midway through the half, Joe Livingstone – outstanding in the heart of midfield – saw two headers brilliantly saved in quick succession by the home keeper during a sustained spell of Danes pressure.

Jack McKirdy and Livingstone both went close before the interval, yet the score remained 1-1 at the break.

The second-half continued in the same vein. Lawrence volleyed over from a clever McKirdy pass, Officer teed up McKirdy for a comfortable save, and Robertson produced a fine fingertip stop from a Gartcosh free-kick.

Then, on 65 minutes, the floodlights failed. After a lengthy delay and no sign of all the floodlights coming back on, the referee abandoned the fixture.

The Brandanes will feel aggrieved to be denied the chance to claim all three points after playing well, but the result remains voided.

The match will now be replayed in full on a date yet to be confirmed and attention now turns to Saturday’s home league fixture against Alva at Rothesay Joint Campus–kick-off at 2pm.
