Busy spell for Dunoon Hillrunners as members take on major challenges

DUNOON Hill runners have enjoyed a busy spell of racing, with members taking on everything from ultra-marathons on the West Highland Way to local 10K events.

One of the standout achievements came from Amy Campbell, who completed the West Highland Way Triple Crown after taking part in all three major races along the route in a single calendar year.

The challenge consists of the Devil o the Highlands Race, the West Highland Way Race and the Highland Fling, covering almost 200 miles in total.

Amy completed the 42-mile Devil o the Highlands Race from Tyndrum to Fort William in April before tackling the full West Highland Way Race in June.

The latter covers approximately 95 to 97 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, with Amy completing the race in around 30 hours.

Her Triple Crown challenge was completed with the 53-mile Highland Fling on August 29, which covers the southern section of the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Tyndrum.

Across the three races, runners face approximately 27,000 feet of elevation.

Amy said conditions were tough across all three races, with the West Highland Way Race proving the most difficult.

She said: “I was running for almost 30 hours and lost two nights’ sleep.

“The race starts at 1am on Saturday morning and I finished at 7am on Sunday morning.

“I never set out to do this challenge at the start of the year, but as I ticked each race off, the possibility became closer.

“I am still in disbelief that I managed this, but I am super proud of myself too.”

Other members have also been busy competing across Scotland.

Four Hillrunners took part in the Ben Nevis Race, while members also lined up for the Glencoe Marathon and Stirling 10K.

Grant Mackellar enjoyed a particularly successful outing at the Glencoe Marathon, finishing as the first male V40.

One Hillrunner also finished fourth overall at the Glencoe Marathon.

The club’s members have most recently been in action at the Arrochar 10K, with runners taking advantage of perfect conditions, particularly Philip Richardson, who claimed first place in the MV50 category.

The club congratulated all its members who have taken part in the Ben Nevis Race, Glencoe Marathon, Stirling 10K and Arrochar 10K, with plenty of impressive performances across the various events.
