BUTE COUNTY and Cowal Cricket maintained that winning feeling with a three-wicket victory at Mearns which cemented their position in second place in the Western Championship 4 table.

A positive performance with the ball, aided and abetted by wicketkeeper Chris Marriott, put the hosts on the back foot from the off with Mark Crichton (3 for 17) and skipper Louis Ware (3 for 23) leading the way with a trio of wickets. Guy Crichton (2 for 16) and Jack Deans (1 for 19) also weighed in to whittle out Mearns for 103 off 34 overs.

The visitors set about the target with some impressive batting from Ware who struck 18 off 22 balls, before brothers Guy (25 off 70 balls) and Mark Crichton (6 off

15 balls) added to the total. Some dogged batting down the order saw Bute get over the line to finish on 104 for 7 off 40 overs with Paul Power and Stephen Ramage ending the game unbeaten.

After the match, ecstatic skipper, Ware, said: “It’s great to get two wins on the spin after a series of cancelled and abandoned matches and we now face two big challenges in the form of a home game with Hillhead this Saturday in Rothesay and a trip across the ‘watter’ to face local rivals Inverclyde on June 27.”

he added: “We need to maintain this winning run as we aim to dislodge Kelburne from top spot.”
