DUNOON’S Barry Campbell has put pen to paper on a deal to keep him at the Rock as League Two outfit Dumbarton moved to secure his services.
The talented youngster had a difficult campaign last year, leaving Albion Rovers and Port Juniors before landing at the Rock at the tail end of the season.
However, after impressing in his brief spell at the club, he looks set to stay for another season with their under-20s.
Barry said: “It’s come at a good time for me.
I suffered a lot last season with game time and didn’t really enjoy my football. I was finding it hard at times, but an option came to sign for Dumbarton 20s.
At first Campbell was hesitant, having made the brave decision to leave Greenock Morton and chase first-team football last year, but stepping back into development football has proved to be a great decision, with his form rewarded with a new deal.
He added: “It’s been nothing but positive for me.
The coaches have been unbelievable; they have helped me so much in a hard time in my career and I’m back enjoying it in a good environment. After getting offered my new deal, I’m excited to kick on and hopefully get some first-team minutes in League Two next year.
His return to form culminated in a winning goal in the Lowland Development League Knockout Cup final — a much-needed confidence boost for the footballer.
He said: “Scoring in the cup final for me was massive as well.
I’ve had such a season of lows and to end it on such a high has been a dream come true for me, when I didn’t think there would be many positives this season.
I’m excited to see what next season brings.
I would also like to say a massive thank you to Cot House petrol station for sponsoring me for the new season.”
It isn’t only Barry who’s delighted with the deal, though, as Jordan Woodford, manager of Dumbarton FC’s Lowland Development League under-20s, added: “We are delighted to sign someone of Barry’s quality and experience. He had a brief spell in the team last season coming in at the tail end where he showed his worth very quickly. We look forward to working with him more this season.”
