COUNCIL officials will examine the possibility of a bigger bin to serve Otter Ferry Beach near Kilfinan, an official has said after a resident claimed calls had been made for a year.
Catriona Renfrew, of Kilfinan Community Council, raised the issue at a meeting of councillors, saying that the existing facility was insufficient for the number of people visiting the beach.
Mark Calder, project manager with Argyll and Bute Council, mentioned that removing bins at rural locations had also been seen to stop litter issues, but pledged to look into a larger bin for the site.
The discussion took place at a meeting of the council’s Bute and Cowal area committee on Tuesday, September 1.
Ms Renfrew asked: “We have been asking for a year if we can have a better provision of bins. We have had exchanges with the council but the single public bin that we have got is not enough for the amount of people using the beach.
Mr Calder responded: “I have seen the pictures that you have sent in with emails about this. We can potentially have a look at providing a bigger bin in that location.
“What makes it tricky is the geography and the fairly isolated nature of the location. We do not have a lorry going past on a regular basis, but we could look at a bigger bin that ties in with collections.
“What we have found in a lot of rural locations is that bins attract litter, and when you remove them it tends to remove the litter problems with it.
“But I appreciate what you are saying. I do not think it is possible to provide additional frequency of collections, but we can look at a larger bin as long as it fits in with the cycle around commercial properties.”
