Council warns residents over fake Council Tax refund emails

ARGYLL and Bute residents are being warned to watch out for scam emails falsely claiming they are owed a Council Tax refund.

Argyll and Bute Council has issued an alert after being made aware of fraudulent messages being sent to households across the area.

The emails claim recipients have overpaid their Council Tax and are entitled to money back, but the council has confirmed the messages are not genuine.

Residents are being urged not to click on any links contained in the emails, respond to the messages or provide bank details or other personal information.

The council is encouraging anyone who receives a suspicious email to report it to the National Cyber Security Centre by forwarding it to [email protected].

Anyone unsure whether correspondence about their Council Tax is genuine should contact Argyll and Bute Council directly through its official channels.

The warning comes as residents are reminded to remain vigilant against fraudsters attempting to obtain personal and financial information by posing as legitimate organisations.
