MEMBERS of Cowal Camera Club were treated to a memorable evening on Monday, when they welcomed guest speaker Mike Martin from Bristol via Zoom.
Mr Martin, a member of Bristol Camera Club and the Disabled Photographers Society, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking presentation entitled Shooting People.
From the outset, he reassured members that photographing people need not be intimidating, encouraging everyone to approach portraiture with confidence, curiosity and creativity. Mike’s photographic career is marked by an impressive list of accolades.
He has enjoyed success in numerous competitions, including international salons, earning prestigious awards and distinctions along the way. Yet beyond the honours, it was his passion for the craft that truly stood out. Taking members on a journey from his very first image – captured on slide film – through to his most recent work, Mike shared how his style evolved over the years.
He spoke warmly of the mentors and fellow photographers who inspired and encouraged him in his early days, reminding us all of the importance of community and shared learning.
Determined to create images that stood apart, Mike described how he would often look for a fresh angle during photoshoots, sometimes choosing to work with infrared equipment to produce striking, unconventional results.
His willingness to experiment and push boundaries was a powerful reminder that creativity thrives when we dare to try something different. The evening was not only informative but truly inspiring.
Filled with humour, honesty and practical insight, Mike’s talk challenged members to rethink how they approach portraiture and to strive to make their own images more personal, distinctive and meaningful. It was a presentation that will undoubtedly influence members’ work in the months to come.
