COWAL CAMERA Club members enjoyed a captivating armchair journey on Monday, October 27, as club president Sybil Baldwin presented; ‘Let’s Go to My Happy Place’—a heartfelt tribute to the island of Jersey.
Sybil traced her long- held connection to the island—where her nephew was born 58 years ago— and how a fascination with gorillas, and the conservation work of Gerald Durrell at Jersey Zoo, finally prompted her first visit in 2018.
Five nights was all it took to fall for the island’s charm; she has returned every year since (pandemic aside), travelling from Dunoon to Poole to catch the ferry.
Her talk blended history, landmarks and personal highlights: the shimmering Glass Church with its Lalique glasswork; the philanthropy of Jesse and Florence Boot of Boots Chemist; and the sobering Jersey War Tunnels, which she described as essential to understanding the island’s wartime story.
The evening closed with a showreel of images—wild orchid fields, Corbière Lighthouse at sunset, and a finalairborneviewfromher first flight—capturing the spirit of her ‘happy place’.
Cowal Camera Club welcomes everyone— from complete beginners to keen photographers. Meetings are held Mondays at 7.30pm in the Wellness Room, Unit 2, 8 Hamilton Street, Dunoon.
