Cowal fiddlers strike winning note at National Mòd

COWAL Fiddle Workshop has struck gold at the National Mòd 2026, securing first place in a closely fought competition in Glasgow.

Members of the workshop travelled to the city on Saturday, October 10 to compete in the Group Fiddle Class, where they faced strong opposition from fellow musicians.

The competition allows a maximum of 11 performers per group, including at least three fiddlers, with each ensemble required to perform a traditional set comprising a Slow Air, March, Strathspey and Reel.

After months of dedicated rehearsals throughout the summer, the Cowal musicians impressed the adjudicator with their performance, narrowly claiming the top spot by just a single point.

The adjudicator praised the exceptionally high standard of playing across the competition, acknowledging that choosing a winner had been an extremely difficult decision.

However, it was Cowal Fiddle Workshop’s distinctive fiddle harmonies, showcased across all four pieces, that ultimately gave the group the winning edge.

The victorious ensemble comprised group leader Angela Johnson, Charlie Weall, Meg Tierney, Sandra Taylor, Sue Clarke, Callum Satchel, Moira Millar and Pam Horton, accompanied by Allan Pettie on guitar and Allan MacDougall on keyboard.

The group’s winning music was arranged by J. A. Callander.

The national success marks a proud moment for Cowal Fiddle Workshop and is a fitting reward for the dedication, enthusiasm and hard work of its members.

The achievement also brings national recognition to Cowal’s traditional music community, demonstrating the wealth of musical talent in the area.
