Cowal local wins maiden open mic competition

DUNOON’S Drew Pearson had the last laugh after winning the first open mic comedy competition at Sandbank’s community-owned Oakbank Inn.

A packed pubon Saturday, September 19, welcomed seven comedians from across the west of Scotland on Saturday for the inaugural Funny… You Should Say That comedy night.

And it was local man Drew who eventually saw off the competition to take the top spot – despite it being only his second comedy gig.

Having previously taken to the stage at an event in Greenock, Drew impressed the Sandbank audience to secure victory.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the evening,” he said. “Laughter really is the best medicine!”

Airdrie-based comedian Billy Bremner, fresh from performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, finished a close second.

He said: “That was an amazing gig. I loved it. What a wonderful bunch of people! Can I come back every time you run this?”

Third place was shared between Tam Anderson from Alexandria, Graham McGregor from Airdrie and Innellan-based Arun Uttamchandani.

The successful debut looks unlikely to be a one-off, with the Oakbank Inn now planning to make its comedy nights a
regular fixture.
