COWAL Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) has launched a new scholarship scheme for youth members of the club. Founded in 2003, CMBC welcomes all types of off-road riding in Dunoon and its surrounding areas while promoting responsible riding and improving, developing and building new routes.
Junior members between the ages of 12 and 18 who have been a member of CMBC for at least a year will be able to apply for funds to help pay for the cost of entry fees and transportation to mountain bike events and competitions in 2027. The goal is to increase junior membership at the club so that they can foster a new generation of mountain bikers and competitors.
Dunoon has world class off-road and mountain bike trails, which have hosted the Scottish Enduro Series and the 2024 Scottish Gravel Championships.
Sara Hawley, chair of CMBC, said: “Our club is comprised of passionate members who want to support and develop off-road bike riding locally now and into the future.
“We’re excited to launch this scholarship fund for local youth mountain bikers to be able to compete across Scotland. Part of our club’s mission is to support participation in competitive activities and facilitate introducing keen beginners to the sport of mountain biking. This scholarship initiative helps us fund competitive activities while our coaching sessions and group rides, available to all members, ensures the passing on of off-road cycling skills to new generations.”
Adult memberships are £10 for the year, while junior membership for 12-18 year-olds is £5 and requires a guardian to sign a consent form. Membership has a range of benefits, including third party liability insurance and legal support in the event of an accident while training, commuting or at club rides, 10% discount on bike products at Cowal Car Components and discounts at other local businesses.
It also includes the ability to borrow club equipment like a training ramp, GoPro camera, and club gazebo and access to the club’s trail maintenance and building tools.
As for group activities, membership gives you entry in CMBC’s Summer Race Series, Winter Wellness Workshops and private Facebook Group and WhatsApp group for organised club rides. Community outreach activities have included kids mountain bike coaching sessions and trail repairs.
New members wishing to join the club can contact the secretary on 07759 940248 or email [email protected].
