PLANS have been lodged to change a proposed café at Craigendoran Pier House into an event space and gallery.
A proposal by Forbes Hamilton for a restaurant/café and kayaking business at the Station Road site was awarded planning permission by Argyll and Bute Council last year.
But a new application, lodged by Matthew Young, seeks to change the café to an event space and gallery, as well as amending the design and adding a workshop.
The council’s planning officers are expected to rule on the proposed amendment by early October, with the public now able to view the plans and submit feedback.
A statement supporting the new application, compiled by planning agents HMA Architects, said: “Although Helensburgh has a number of event spaces, the majority of them are in the centre or western end of the town whilst a large percentage of the housing is in the eastern end, particularly after recent new housing developments have been built.
“The space around the buildings will be landscaped with a combination of grass and native planting, providing an attractive outdoor space.
“The site provide stunning, uninterrupted, views up and down the Clyde (east and south) and up the Gareloch (west). Although visible from housing down the street, the building will not obscure their views.
“As the building has no architectural reference points directly adjacent to it, it has been designed as a standalone building. The proposal uses profiled timber on the first floor and roof with stonework below.
“These materials have been chosen as they will be able to withstand the exposed location of the site, both in the materials themselves and the detailing of them. This will provide a statement building of high quality. This conforms with the Area for Action status of the site.”
