Ferry terminal toilets set for demolition and rebuild

PLANS have been submitted for demolition and replacement of the public toilets at Tayinloan Ferry Terminal.

West Kintyre Community Council has made the application to Argyll and Bute Council to install new facilities at a site adjacent to the road entrance leading to the ferry slipway.

The existing building, used by ferry passengers travelling to Gigha, is reported to have been subject to vandalism.

Council officials are expected to rule on the application for planning permission by mid-May, with the public now able to view plans and submit feedback.

A design statement by MBS Architecture said: “The proposal is to construct a new toilet block providing the same male and female sanitary facilities as the existing building, with the addition of an accessible entrance and a dedicated accessible WC facility.

“All sanitary fittings will be robust stainless steel, securely fixed, and access to the internal areas will be controlled by an electronic card‑payment entry system. These measures are intended to minimise vandalism and reduce the potential for damage.

“Temporary toilet facilities, provided in the form of two portable units, will be in place for the duration of the works.

“Heras fencing will be erected to secure the site and safeguard the public throughout demolition and construction activities. Access to the ferry terminal, the adjacent café and farm will be maintained throughout the duration of the works.

“The replacement building will be constructed using concrete blockwork walls finished with a wet-dash render, and a profiled steel roof. This reflects the existing building and will provide a robust construction capable of withstanding the exposed environment.”
