Former Furnace Baptist Church to be demolished for new home

PLANS to demolish the old Baptist Church in Furnace to replace it with a house have been approved by council officers.

Gail Cook’s application for planning permission for the site has been given the go-ahead by Argyll and Bute Council after no representations were received from the public.

Planning officers from the authority said that the proposal complied with all relevant policies and there was no reason why it should not be allowed to proceed.

An officer said in a handling report: “Detailed planning permission is sought for the demolition of the former Baptist Church, Furnace to allow redevelopment of the site with a new dwellinghouse.

“The site to be cleared and prepared is 30m north of the adopted road Whitehaven, a main route within the settlement. There are two existing traditionally designed houses on the approach and a category A listed building 20m or so at the end of the track.

“The proposed house is to be sited to the centre of the plot with pathways around all sides with the parking and turning to the south. The principal elevation is partly extended from the centre by 4m to a fully glazed frontage with a roof ridge perpendicular to the main ridge and around one metre lower.

“The amenity space is split between the front and back garden areas and although both will be narrow their lengths of around 23m each are deemed sufficient for the needs of a three-bedroom property. The size of the plot is considered sufficient that all works can be contained on site.

“The proposal is consistent with the relevant provisions of the Development Plan, and there are no other material considerations of sufficient significance to indicate that it would be appropriate to withhold planning permission.”
