Full fibre rollout begins in Dunoon

DUNOON is set for a major broadband boost after Openreach confirmed work has begun on a new full fibre network across the town.

The upgrade will give thousands of homes and businesses access to some of the fastest broadband speeds available in Europe, with engineers already starting work locally.

Openreach says the once-in-a-generation investment will allow households to connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds while helping businesses improve online services and remain competitive in the years ahead.

The company expects the majority of homes and businesses in Dunoon to be included in the rollout as work progresses.

Full fibre technology is designed to provide more reliable and resilient internet connections, with fewer faults, more consistent speeds and greater capacity to cope with growing online demand.

For households, that means smoother streaming, gaming and video calls, while businesses could benefit from improved online banking, customer services and communications.

Residents are being advised they may notice increased engineering activity across the town during the project.

Robert Thorburn, Openreach partnership director for Scotland, said: “We’re bringing full fibre broadband to Dunoon and letting local people know what to expect.

“This is a major infrastructure upgrade, so there will be more engineering teams, equipment and vans around town, and we’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.”

He added that wherever possible Openreach would use existing ducts and poles to reduce the need for roadworks and new street infrastructure, although some new poles, underground ducts and cables may still be required in certain areas.

Mr Thorburn also said the company remained committed to reducing the environmental impact of the project as part of its wider sustainability strategy.

People can register for updates and check when their property becomes eligible for connection through the Openreach website.

Openreach says its full fibre network now reaches more than 22 million properties across the UK, with plans to expand that figure to 25 million by the end of 2026.
