Innellan Golf Club launches summer season with March Medal

IT’S BEEN an exciting beginning to the year for Innellan’s loyal golfers as the winter league for both the Saturday and Sunday sections at Innellan Golf Club came to a close.

The final weekend gave the opportunity for many to gain winning points, but extremely poor weather on Sunday meant no change to the standings. Harry Black won the Sunday League with 235 points, with Dougie Cooper in second with 233 and Billy McLaughlin in third with 226.

Saturday was a close call, however. The day began with Iain McKie and Duncan Lauder joint top and Harry Black a point behind. Black carded a great score to give him an additional two points, however McKie was also on form to gain a pair. Therefore, McKie took the spoils and won the Saturday Winter League by a point, with Black a close second and Lauder coming in third.

Then the start of the summer season came as the March Medal began on a beautiful day. Twenty-two players headed out to dust off their woods and hit their polished irons in what was a close competition with some amazing scores right off the bat. With the course in great condition, some great scores were recorded. First was W. McCosh, with an amazing 41 points that included eight pars and a birdie. Second was Stewarty Campbell with 38 points, carding seven pars, a birdie and an amazing eagle on the seventh. Third, only a point behind with 37, was D. Cooper. With many other good scores, the stage is set for what will be an exciting season.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Well done to all who turned out for the first match and to the two winners of the Saturday and Sunday winter league.”

Elsewhere, the Dae It Yersel Spring Series got underway. This coveted series started on the first day neck and neck. Simon McMahon came first with 19 points, however Alisdair Simpson also scored 19 and was pushed into second on the countback, while third on the day was Len Maxwell. The second round saw Billy McLaughlin win with an impressive 21 points, with Stewarty Campbell beaten on a countback and third was Tom Telfer with 20 points. Still two more days of the series to go.

A spokesperson for the club added: “Thanks to all who played to make both winter leagues such a great success.

“Please see the master scoreboard for upcoming competitions. All days cancelled due to weather will be rescheduled, with dates to follow. Good luck for the season ahead.”
