Isle of Bute - I love Bute

Editor – It was great to see (Friday 12th) £120k saving Rothesay Winter Gardens and millions more going to improve the eyesore of Rothesay’s Royal Hotel. It makes my heart sing to see changes happening, improvements being made and money, money, money for the Pavilion too…BUT.

When I think about the future, I’m sad because many of us over a certain age won’t be here on the island to enjoy these things. We will have been shipped off to the mainland to see our days out in a place we don’t know, alongside strangers.

Because there is no Care Home for us oldies, there is no money, money, money

for gran or grandad to stay here in the place they call home and for us to enjoy the Pavilion, the Winter Gardens, we will be living who knows where.

All that money to save buildings we love and none to build a new home for us oldies or extend and improve Thomson Court.

I’m just wondering if I should tear myself away from this beautiful island

now, before I get carted off, but you know I just can’t, I Love Bute, but my anxiety levels are high, so I need to put my energy into doing something about this. All ideas welcome! I’ve got, I hope a few years to go, I’m just 72.

Well done to all those involved in saving the Winter Gardens and the restoration of Rothesay’s Royal Hotel. Do any of you have any ideas how we oldies can stay and spend our last years, here on Isle of Bute?
