New debt recovery contract for Inverclyde council

Inverclyde Council will enter into a new contract for the delivery of debt recovery and sheriff officer services, it has been confirmed.

The local authority is set to inform elected members it will turn to Glasgow-based firm Walker Love for these functions from the start of April.

It comes ahead of the termination of its existing agreement with Alex M Adamson which is due to take place at the end of March.

Councillors will be asked to note the appointment of Walker Love at the policy and resources committee next week.

A finance services update, which will be considered at the meeting, has explained the specific role and functions it will take on as a result.

The report by the chief financial officer said: “The council’s current debt recovery and sheriff officer contract with Alex M Adamson will terminate on March 31.

“From April 1 … Walker Love will assume responsibility for delivering these services on behalf of the council.

“The contract encompasses sheriff officer and diligence functions, supporting the recovery of council tax, non-domestic rates, sundry debts, housing benefit overpayments and parking charge notices.”

The report also detailed how the handover will be handled by Alex M Adamson and Walker Love.

It added: “During the transition period, the incumbent supplier may continue to collect certain outstanding debts, while all new debts will be allocated to Walker Love with immediate effect.

“Appropriate communication will be issued to the public and businesses in advance to ensure awareness and a smooth transition.”

The committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 3.
