New footpath approved to improve safety at Portavadie ferry terminal

PLANS for the formation of a footpath linking Portavadie ferry terminal’s slipway to its neighbouring bus stop have been approved.

Caledonian Maritime Assets’ application for planning permission has been given the go-ahead by Argyll and Bute Council, with no objections or expressions of support received from the public.

Council planning officials said that the work will provide a safer pedestrian route from the ferry slipway to the bus stop for connecting with public transport for foot passengers and cyclists.

An officer said in a handling report: “The proposal is for the formation of a kerbed footpath which will travel from the slipway along the northern side of the site.

“The footpath will have a diameter of 1.6m. A pedestrian barrier with handrail will run along the northern side of the footpath to join the existing bus shelter. No details have provided to indicate the height or type of material the barrier will be constructed of.

“Further details will therefore be requested via condition. The proposed alterations are within the site of an existing working ferry terminal and are of an appropriate design, size, and scale.

“The proposed alterations will not have a significant impact on the character and amenity of the ferry terminal and the surrounding landscape.

“The proposal complies with the above policies by improving the facilities and safety of pedestrians so that they can travel by ferry and then onwards using sustainable transport methods such as walking, cycling and public transport.”
