Plans unveiled for craft distillery at Ardrishaig oil depot

PLANS have been revealed for a new craft distillery to be constructed on the site of a former oil depot in Ardrishaig.

Argyll and Bute Council officers are considering the proposal by Spectrum Spirits Ltd for the site on Chalmers Street.

Visitor facilities planned for the distillery include a courtyard, viewing terrace and tasting spaces, while developers hope to “regenerate a contaminated compound into a unique visitor attraction” for the village.

Council officers are expected to rule on the plans by late March, with the public now able to view plans and submit feedback.

A design statement by planning agents Organic Architects said: “The site lies within one of Argyll and Bute’s Local Development Plan ‘Areas for Action’, which aims to revitalise the heart of Ardrishaig and enhance the surrounding environment.

“As a former industrial site currently affected by contamination, it plays a crucial role in realising the ambitions set out in the Ardrishaig Regeneration Masterplan.

“The Egg Shed, recently completed as an early phase of the regeneration, marked a promising start, though further progress on the masterplan has since slowed.

“The proposal ensures the wider surrounding context of these important buildings to the area are taken into consideration and enhanced through the landscaping of the distillery ensuring a comprehensive vision for the area.

“This proposed development offers a significant economic and cultural opportunity for Ardrishaig, transforming a long-neglected and contaminated site into a vibrant destination with lasting benefits for the local community.”

The statement added: “The proposed development offers a significant opportunity to transform a key site within Ardrishaig, which currently acts as a barrier to the successful implementation of the village’s regeneration masterplan.

“The applicant is committed to remediation of the contaminated site that will unlock the potential for future development.

“The craft distillery will bring skilled employment to the local area, contributing positively to the village’s economy and community.”
