Questions raised over Rothesay ferry timetable changes

Editor – The front page story in last week’s edition of the Isle of Bute News refers to CalMac’s timetable change cancelling scheduled sailings on Wednesday afternoons to allow one of the Rothesay ferries to have routine maintenance carried out each week.
The company states that only four out of the ninety-two sailings will be affected, but this ignores the fact that four out of the fourteen sailings on a Wednesday, just under 30%, are being cancelled. If 30% of Wednesday’s service can be eliminated, how long will it be before they use this to justify reducing the service provision on other days?
It may have escaped their notice that both ferries are already tied up at Rothesay pier for eight hours in every twenty-four. Surely some arrangement could have been made to carry out these newly discovered critical maintenance tasks overnight?
The recently published schedule is sure to cause confusion and frustration amongst travellers, and there remains a suspicion that a consequent simplification to align all the other days of the week with the new Wednesday service will soon be proposed.
