Riverside reopens–but questions over long-term future remain

DUNOON’S Riverside Leisure Centre has reopened after being shut for more than two months for essential maintenance.

The facility was closed On October 13, as work was carried out on the building and a meeting between council officials confirmed that the pool has reopened.

Escalating concerns about the condition of the Riverside Leisure Centre at the corner of Moir Street and Alexandra Parade had been expressed after the closure of the centres health suite during its refurbishment.

Work was halted when unforeseen building fabric issues were discovered just as the project was due to begin.

Argyll and Bute Council set aside funding for essential repairs which have now been completed in order to keep parts of the current building operational, but officials have concerns over the condition of the Riverside complex.

A £200,000 business case was launched by the local authority to identify an alternative site for a new leisure centre amid growing concern over the centres long-term viability.

It’s understood a site selection meeting took place earlier this year and it’s hoped an announcement regarding a new site will be made in February.
